I came to this practice through an obsession with tension and opposing forces, most notably, explorations of difference and repetition. As soon as a thing or a concept seems defined, I want to un-define it and reveal hidden antitheses.
Though operating in a visually minimalist language, involving the body in physically making work is deeply important to me. Creating work with the precision of a machine but made with the hand is the crowning glory of my achievement. I am drawn to the push/pull between precision and gesture. Thus, I simultaneously embrace and reject expression.
My recent work is both drawing and sculpture. Through the use of string or thread, I can literally “draw” lines in space or around objects. I use color, texture, shape, and titling to convey meaning in restrained compositions.
